And, true, we had a taste of this from the 2012 movie Argo. However, unless you go out of the way to find out the details, you probably know little as to what happened beyond the America hostage crisis. First off, this game doesn't touch that hostage crisis. Instead, the game opens with the ominous words, "During the Summer of 1978, thousands of Iranians flooded the streets and fought for change despite their class, religious beliefs, and political allegiance. The protests erupted into a bloody uprising against Iran's self appointed King - the Shah. What you are about to experience is based upon real stories, real events, and real people." The game starts with you as the protagonist and aspiring photojournalist Reza Shirazi in 1980 who is ambushed at his hideout and taken to the dreaded Evin prison and interrogated. The game then goes back two years to September, 1978 and the events leading up to this.Anyone who is has played a Telltale game such as Tales Of The Borderlands or similar game Life Is Strange will recognize the structure. You get to shape your story based upon the responses you make, and there are two action sequences which rely on just good timing along the lines of Dragon's Lair. Being that this is an independent production rather than a AAA title, it shows in the graphics quality. This isn't the game to show off the capabilities of your newest graphics card. Use Doom instead. Because of limitations of the Unity engine, you see repeats of the same NPCs, and I even caught one walking through a phone booth. (Whoops). In one scene, I saw the protagonist open up a cabinet, and his right hand was some distance away. (It must be those psychic Iranian powers!)But, this isn't a graphics game. This is a story game based upon what actually happened almost forty years ago. As a photojournalist, you take pictures of what happens, and those pictures that you take during the game are then matched up with the actual real pictures of what actually happened along with the actual background information. I came away from this game with more knowledge than I had going in, and learned something. That says something. It didn't change my mind that the Shah wasn't a good leader and the resulting government was a bad, oppressive government, but it was replaced with something worse. Gameplay, however, is short. I played through this game twice, once as I normally would, and once as a jerk, and sure enough, I got two different endings. That gameplay, however, added up to less than four hours. Would I recommend the game? Heck, I would recommend the game AND the soundtrack, but with caveats. Because of what happens in the game, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone less than a high school student.. It's awesome, but I assumed I was purchasing a complete story, not so much an episode. For the price of half a Telltale season, you purchase the equivalent of one Telltale episode. I was sad to see it end on a cliffhanger, but that's just a testiment to how amazing the game is.. It's a good game. The gameplay feels very much like a slowed down Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy. Of course, not comparable with Fahrenheit/IP since it was absolute epic, but 1979 is good too.For those which don't know the mentioned game: It's basically a interactive movie & adventure. You walk around with your character, search for items (mostly background information) and lead dialog (big part of the game). There are some quicktime sequences, but not very much or very difficult ones.+ Gameplay+ Many Choices+ Lot of dialog+ Interesting setting & background (Iranian revolution 1979)+ PriceI recomment 1979, but there are also some negatives:Even with lot of choices, the outcome is not that different. Your choice only influence the situation very slightly, which is especially sad because there is so much potential for alternate outcomes. The background information is nice, especially to have a insight in iranian culture. But they are not neutral. The game let you basically only support the non-violent left. Communism is not particulary shown as bad, only the violent revolution is condemned. The Shah is the absolute evil in person and responsible for everything bad. The radical shias is just a shadowy menace in the background. Other political views are not welcome. Bad. The 1979 Revolution was very complex and interesting. This games let it look like an SJW uprising against evil.- Graphic is okay, but nothing more- Choices have not enought influence- politically one-sided / pro-socialist-pro-democratic - So many info objects to find, if you looking 100%, you may need to play though the game 5x in order to get them all- only 2.5-4 h playtime to finish it onceGet it, it's interesting and fun, but don't except too much.. An interesting informative and historical 'experience' which comes across as a sort of documentry- game. 1979 Revolution: Black Friday has adopted Telltales successful storytelling methods as well as some quick time events, but at a mediocre level. You play as a photographer in Iran, documenting the 1979 revolution through his camera, but he gets caught up in both sides and finds himself in trouble. Based on real historical events, this game proved most interesting for learning about the past and hearing from both sides. Although, it stopped impressing me shortly after I became happily accustomed to this 'new' documentry-game mechanics. Now for the bad:The quick time events matched with clunky controls and an extremely short amount of time to contemplate pivotal decisions lets it down and almost seemed silly, they didnt really need to even be in the game. Sometimes there is not enough time to read all of the options, let alone to make an educated decision. As many other reviewers said, the ending is beyond disappointing, it reaches the climatic moment and THE END. And lastly, the game was over in 2-3 hours.Although I do recommend this game, the graphics are nice, voice acting is great, story line is thrilling, choices matter and you can see the consequences of these choices. However, with the short game length, irrelevant quick time events, and clunky controls I could only recommend to buy this on a sale, especially if you'd like to learn a bit of history from a different perspective, in an interactive manner.. Pleasantly surprised by this game. Basically a 'Telltale' style game, in every way. If you know those games you'll be familiar with this. Where it differs is in telling a true story, of the revolution in Iran and events leading to it, from many perpectives. Like all revolutions it is messy. There are many sides with different agendas. Though all united by wanting a better life than one they have under the brutal Shah. The game mechanics are simple, the story is well told. The game is also a cultural and historical document, filled with information for those wanting to dig deeper, which I urge you to do. These are stories most in the US and Europe will never hear, so put aside a couple of hours to make the most of this unique gaming experience. I can't think of many like it.. TLDR: If you're a fan of TellTale games, you'll enjoy this... even if it is a bit copycat-ishhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGmFFxPozesPros:- Great visuals with a great art style (although not extremely unique). It is very close to that of the Telltale game series.- Very good voice acting- Playing through historical events is not only fun, but factual!Cons:- Some simple decisions can kill you, (such as refusing to say a man's name during the interrogation in Ch 1) in which you have to start the chapter over, leaving the feeling of of one being led on linearly instead of your choices actually impacting your story.- Game can feel a bit "copy cat" ish due to it being so similar to the TellTale games- Hate to say it, but TellTale is a better bang for the buck.As fun as it it is to play through a historical event instead of a fictional one, the game feels a bit lacking in the whole "Your decisions change the world around you" aspect. and it wanders off a bit more towards the "We want you to go this way, go ahead and say no, we'll just kill you and restart the chapter."Thanks, and of course. Game on!. Cool idea. I'd love to see more games focussing on fascinating historical events like this one. It does a good job of explaining a piece of what was one of the more complicated revolutions of modernity. However, that's all it does - offer a piece. It's not a comprehensive history lesson, so best not to treat it as such, but is an excellent example of trying to grab a player and place them in a time and place and circumstance seperate from anything they've most likely known. However, for all that - it feels a bit janky, the QTE's feel a bit silly, and even the main story seems unfinished. This isn't the most polished product out there, so if that turns you off, best not even try, here. It's a worth effort, though, and I hope more games take cues from this one. Also, a sequel would be nice
